Perhaps faith does not begin on the day we start believing.

A Journey of Faith
Jatukam Ramathep and Me
I am one of those who deeply believe in and revere Jatukam Ramathep. But if someone were to ask me exactly when this faith began, I would not be able to give an immediate answer. Looking back, I realize that my faith did not appear overnight. It did not come from someone telling me what to believe, nor did it begin because I followed a popular trend. Instead, it slowly took shape through different moments of my life—through encounters, experiences, questions, and eventually, something I experienced for myself. Only when I looked back did I realize that Jatukam Ramathep had quietly become part of my personal belief for many years. I was not born in Southern Thailand. I was born and raised in the Northeast, far from Nakhon Si Thammarat and from the land where the stories, traditions, and beliefs surrounding Chatukarm Ramathep are deeply rooted.
Yet today, I have Jatukam Ramathep enshrined in my home. And around my neck, I wear an image of Him almost everywhere I go. My faith did not come from following others. What made me believe was my own experience—through worship, prayer, and what happened afterward. So when did my faith in Jatukam Ramathep truly begin? That question forced me to look back through my own life.
A Beginning I Did Not Yet Know Was a Beginning
In 1987, the first generation of Jatukam Ramathep sacred objects was created. At the time, I was only seventeen years old, a Grade 11 student at a provincial school in Northeastern Thailand. I had virtually no interest in Buddhist amulets or sacred objects. What fascinated me instead were traditional talismans and charms—such as tiger fangs and wild-boar tusks. Perhaps it was simply the mind of a teenager. They looked powerful and mysterious, and wearing such objects somehow felt fascinating and even a little adventurous. At that point, I had never even heard the name “Chatukarm Ramathep.” I could never have imagined that many years later, that name would become part of my life.
The First Time I Heard the Name “Chatukarm”
Many years passed. I grew older and entered working life. Around 2005, when I was about thirty-five years old, I was assigned to work on purchasing Arabica coffee in Lam Thap District, Krabi Province. One day, while working there, I noticed a coffee farmer who had come to sell green coffee beans. Around his neck was a large sacred object. It was considerably larger than the Buddhist amulets I was familiar with, and its appearance was quite different. Because I had always been interested in talismans and sacred objects, my curiosity took over. I walked over to him and asked, “What are you wearing around your neck?” His answer was simple. “A Jatukam medallion.” I remember being slightly confused. I had never heard the name before. That was the first time in my life that the word “Chatukarm” entered my awareness. At the time, it was nothing more than a name. But looking back today, I sometimes wonder whether that small encounter was actually the beginning of something I simply could not yet understand.
When Chatukarm Ramathep Became a National Phenomenon
By 2006, the name “Chatukarm Ramathep” had become known throughout Thailand. Something I had barely heard of the year before suddenly became a nationwide phenomenon. People talked about their experiences. They spoke about blessings, protection, prosperity, and extraordinary events that they believed were associated with Chatukarm Ramathep. And one phrase was repeated everywhere: “Ask, and you shall receive.” At the time, however, I was still trying to establish myself professionally and financially. The prices of popular Chatukarm Ramathep editions were rising dramatically, and many of the most sought-after pieces were simply beyond what I wanted—or could afford—to spend.
So I remained an observer.
I listened.
I followed the stories.
I watched the phenomenon from a distance.
Then, around 2007, the market began to cool.
That was when I asked a friend to reserve a Jatukam Ramathep medallion for me from Wat Khet Udomsak Wanaram in Chumphon Province. There was another personal reason behind that decision. I had already held deep respect for Admiral Prince Abhakara Kiartivongse, Prince of Chumphon—widely known among Thai people as Sadet Tia, the Father of the Royal Thai Navy. So for me, this particular sacred object connected two figures I already respected: Sadet Tia and Jatukam Ramathep. If I remember correctly, the offering price was only a little over one hundred baht. That became the first Jatukam Ramathep sacred object I ever owned. But I did not wear it. Because of its large size, I placed it inside a box and kept it on my Buddhist altar. As public interest in Jatukam Ramathep gradually disappeared, the medallion remained quietly inside that box. And life moved on.
When Life Led Me Back to Him
Another seven or eight years passed. Around 2012–2013, when I was approximately forty-two years old, I decided to devote myself fully to running my own business. I had already established a company while working in corporate life, but until then, it had never been my full-time pursuit. Becoming a full-time entrepreneur changed everything.
There were problems.
There was uncertainty.
There was pressure.
There were difficult decisions, financial concerns, and moments when I simply needed something to anchor my mind.
One day, I went back to my Buddhist altar and began looking through the sacred objects I had collected over the years. There it was. The Chatukarm Ramathep medallion I had acquired years before. Its box was covered with the dust of time. I opened it and looked at the image once again. The medallion had not changed. But perhaps I had. Still, because of its large size, I decided not to wear it and eventually returned it to its box. Yet something was different. Chatukarm Ramathep had returned to my thoughts. So I began looking for a smaller sacred object—something connected with Him that I could comfortably wear.
Eventually, I found a small 1987 Chatukarm Ramathep “stamp” medallion with yantra design. It was compact, beautifully designed, and at the time still reasonably priced. I decided to acquire it and wear it around my neck.
From a Phrase to a Personal Experience
There was one phrase that had remained somewhere in my memory for years: “Ask, and you shall receive.” When I received the medallion, I decided to put those words to the test. I made a prayer to Chatukarm Ramathep. There was no elaborate ceremony. No complicated ritual. I simply focused my mind and sincerely asked for something that was important to me at that moment. What happened afterward is something I have never forgotten. What I had asked for came to pass remarkably quickly. For someone else, perhaps it could be dismissed as coincidence. And I respect that interpretation. But for me—the person who made the prayer, who knew the circumstances, and who personally experienced what followed—it became a moment that forced me to stop and think. I found myself asking: “Could there be something here that I still do not understand?” That moment changed the way I saw Jatukam Ramathep. He was no longer simply associated in my mind with a once-famous amulet phenomenon. I wanted to understand more.
So I began researching.
I read.
I studied the history.
I examined different editions.
I became interested in their designs, symbolism, origins, and the stories surrounding them. And gradually, I began collecting Jatukam Ramathep sacred objects.
From Worshipper to Collector and Student
As I learned more, I naturally became interested in pieces that, back in 2006, had once seemed completely beyond my reach. One of them was the famous Khot Setthi 49 edition, which at one time was highly sought after by collectors in Thailand and abroad. Years earlier, I could only look at such pieces from a distance. Later in life, I gradually had the opportunity to acquire various metal versions and materials—although gold remained outside my collection. There were also many other editions that attracted me simply because of their artistry and design. But the longer I collected, the more I came to understand something important: I was no longer merely collecting “amulets.” I was collecting fragments of time.
Art.
Belief.
Cultural memory.
Historical stories.
And the experiences of countless people whose lives had, in one way or another, become connected to Jatukam Ramathep.
Returning to 1987
And this year, I finally had the opportunity to acquire Chatukarm Ramathep sacred objects from 1987—the first-generation year—including both the large and small round-frame types. For the seventeen-year-old boy I once was, living in Northeastern Thailand in 1987 with absolutely no awareness of what was being created in the South at that very moment, this carries a meaning that is difficult to describe.
Owning a first-generation Jatukam Ramathep today feels like more than acquiring another sacred object. It feels as though I spent decades traveling in a great circle, only to return to a beginning I never knew existed. I decided to have the smaller 1987 round-frame piece mounted so that I could wear it together with the 1987 stamp medallion that had accompanied me for many years. The two pieces hold very different meanings for me.
One represents the beginning of my personal experience.
The other represents the beginning of the story itself.
Together, they connect two points in time— the history of Chatukarm Ramathep, and the history of my own journey.
Perhaps Faith Does Not Begin on the Day We Start Believing
Looking back at everything now, I have begun to understand something. Perhaps my faith did not begin on the day my prayer was answered. Perhaps it did not begin when I acquired my first Jatukam Ramathep medallion. It might have begun much earlier— on the day I saw that unusually large sacred object hanging around the neck of a coffee farmer in Krabi. Or perhaps even earlier than that— when a seventeen-year-old boy in Northeastern Thailand was fascinated by traditional charms and talismans, completely unaware that, in that very same year, a sacred object was being created that would become meaningful to him decades later. Sometimes, perhaps, we are not the ones searching for faith. Perhaps faith slowly finds its way toward us—through people, through circumstances, through time, and through experiences. Until one day, we turn around and realize:
“I have been walking this path for much longer than I ever knew.”
From Faith to Storytelling
Today, when I write about Jatukam Ramathep, my intention is not to persuade anyone to believe exactly as I do. Faith is deeply personal. It is something each person must discover—or not discover—for themselves. What I hope to do is simply share Jatukam Ramathep from the perspective I have personally encountered: through history,
art,
belief,
sacred objects,
and my own experiences.
I hope those who are interested will have an opportunity to discover more about Him. Whether they eventually believe, worship, or simply appreciate the history is entirely their own decision. As for me, I no longer feel the need to ask, “When did I begin to believe in Chatukarm Ramathep?”
Because when I look back across the decades, the answer has become clear. My faith was not born from popularity. It was not born because someone told me what to believe. And it was not born merely from the desire to receive something in return. It grew slowly through the experiences of my own life. From a boy in Northeastern Thailand who had never even heard the name “Chatukarm Ramathep”— to the person I am today.
Today, I have Jatukam Ramathep enshrined in my home. I carry His image around my neck. And His story has become part of my own. This is my faith. A faith that did not appear overnight. A faith that traveled alongside my life. And through sharing these stories, I hope in some small way to preserve and pass on the history, symbolism, art, faith, and legacy surrounding Jatukam Ramathep—so that those who are interested may come to know Him not merely as an “amulet,” but as part of a much deeper story.
A story of history.
A story of belief.
And, for me,
a story of finding my own faith.
